Reaching out to the orang asli folk

PETALING JAYA: Engineer Raja Fernaliz Raja Harris is looking to hold a carnival of cheer for the orang asli villagers near Kuala Woh, Perak, by bringing the FreeMarket initiative to them for the fourth time.

“Ahamad Emran and Syed Azmi Alhabshi started the FreeMarket Project – where new and pre-loved items are given away – in and around the urban areas in Kuala Lumpur. I bring the same concept to the orang asli and those living in rural areas.

“We are just a group of friends – like-minded individuals who want to help the asli and kampung folk of Kuala Woh,” said the FreeMarket Kuala Woh organiser who is urging readers to join them.

Raja Fernaliz, 40, said that no money exchanges hands at the freemarket.

“We’re looking to bring pre-loved items like bags, clothes, shoes, household and kitchen items, baby items, toys – anything you have that might be in good condition and useful to others that will fit into your car.

“New items like stationery, toiletries, rubber slippers (flip flops), rubber shoes and boots, colouring books for the kids, kain batik, kain pelikat, sanitary pads (these were super popular!) are most welcome too.

“Grocery items, anything that’s convenient to give away. Bags of rice, sugar, milk, flour, cooking oil – anything you think would be appreciated. Be creative and thoughtful,” she said.

Raja Fernaliz said they’re looking for volun- teers with cars and items to donate as well. Also, those willing to pledge their skills for free: medical and dental services, clowning, magicians, barbers.

“Cash sponsorships are also welcome as we expect to pay local barbers and hawkers to set up free stalls on that day,” she added.

The event, to be held from 9am on Nov 26 at Kuala Woh Recreational Forest in Perak, can also be a lovely excursion for the whole family.

“It’s a special kind of market where the only currency is kindness and good manners. We aim to spread kindness, foster unity, prevent wastage and save the environment,” she added.
