WCES speakers to touch on Belt and Road initiative
KUALA LUMPUR: The ninth World Chinese Economic Summit (WCES) to be held in Hong Kong next month will focus on developing and seizing new opportunities of growth, while recognising imminent global challenges.
Asian Stratgy & Leadership Institute (Asli) chief executive officer Tan Sri Michael Yeoh said the twoday event starting on Nov 13, will feature more than 100 distinguished speakers from around the world.
They would share their thoughts on a variety of topics including the Belt and Road initiative, entrepreneurship, digital economy and disruption, he added.
“Among the interesting figures who will be speaking are Malaysia’s first IT billionaire and Silverlake Group executive chairman Goh Peng Ooi, as well as Steven Wang, vice-president of Didi Chuxing, which is China’s equivalent of Uber.
“Gerry Yim, CEO of Hutchison Port Holdings Trust, will speak at the session on logistics and supply chain,” he told a press conference to announce the WCES at Wisma MCA yesterday.
The WCES is a flagship event created by Asli to enhance connectivity and business linkages between China and South-East Asia, and China and Europe.
It promotes global and regional dialogue on the emergence and role of China as the world’s second largest economy.
It brings together the global Chinese diaspora and promotes entrepreneurship and innovation through business networking and sharing of knowledge and best practices.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be delivering a keynote address at this year’s WCES.
Other speakers include former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, former Pakistani president Pervez Musharaff, Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam and the Governor of Victoria, Australia, Linda Dessau.
Former Hong Kong chief executive C.Y. Leung will be receiving the World Chinese Lifetime Achievement Award.
MCA president and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who will be delivering a special address at WCES, said it is a premier event to discuss how to tap the strength of the China-led Belt and Road initiative and that of the Chinese diaspora.
As the head of the National Logistics Taskforce, Liow said he would be promoting Malaysia’s logistics sector and Digital Free Trade Zone – the first outside China – at the summit.
