M’sian Tamil film fans to get history lesson
FANS of Malaysian Tamil films will get to revisit their favourites and learn the history of the industry through a 13-episode series Cinema Yenum Nathiyinile, which will air on Astro Vaanavil from next month, Tamil Nesan reported.
Astro programming deputy president Dr S. Rajamani, who handed special recognition awards to individuals who contributed to the community’s development in a special ceremony, announced the programme during his speech.
The series will air on Saturdays, and will look at the origin and development of the film industry over the last five decades.
The Malaysian Tamil film industry essentially began with the 1964 film Kadhalikka Neramillai, which saw Malaysian actor Ravichandran play a major role and went on to inspire many local artistes to venture into the industry.
> Women will soon be serving in state-run liquor shops in Kerala, India, after a High Court ruled that preventing women from working in such outlets was discriminatory, the same daily reported.
Kerala Excise Department rules prohibit women from working at hotel bars, beer and wine parlours, clubs, and state-owned beverage outlets.
Eight women were reportedly slated to be appointed as staff in Bevco outlets when a case was brought against their appointment.
However, the court ruled that the government may not discriminate on the basis of gender in staff appointment.
