PETALING JAYA: Beef rendang Wellington and a Malaysian fusion of English trifle will be among the dishes served to Britain’s Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, during their week-long visit to Malaysia starting today.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell said the visit by the Prince of Wales and his wife, which marks the 60th anniversary of Malaysia-Britain bilateral relations, had been designed in detail to reflect the strong ties between the two countries.

“At the royal gala dinner that I will be hosting for the Royal High- nesses, we hope to have representation from all the Malaysian royal households, Cabinet Ministers, senior officials from ministries and the armed services.

“We have gone to the extent of designing the menu where each dish is a fusion of Malaysian and British elements.

“For example, we are making a beef rendang Wellington and, of course, the English trifle. We are fusing Malaysian mango puree and dried pineapple crisps alongside English berries and other standards of trifle.

“Even in our food, we will be celebrating the United Kingdom and Malaysia together,” Treadell said during a press conference at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The visit is part of the royal couple’s 11-day autumn tour which includes Malaysia, Singapore and India, to cement relations ahead of the Commonwealth Summit in Britain next April.

Treadell said the royal couple will be visiting Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Sarawak and Penang to see firsthand the diversity of Malaysians and celebrate the strong partnership between the two nations.

Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah will host an event at the Islamic Arts Museum in Kuala Lumpur, while the Duchess of Cornwall will launch an essay programme that will also be attended by Johor Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah.

“That gives the flavour of the royal engagement between Malaysia’s and the United Kingdom’s royal households throughout the programme,” said Treadell.

Camilla will also visit a Permata school, which will be attended by the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, to underline the commitment in charitable areas.

The Prince of Wales will also be visiting a technology hub to meet young entrepreneurs, including two British technology companies here.

In Perak, the royal couple will be visiting the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Taiping to honour those who stood in defence of Malaya during World War II.

Other events include a visit to the Royal Belum rainforest, where there will be a discussion on forest, wildlife and marine conservation.

Their Royal Highnesses will also meet members of Sarawak’s diverse indigenous communities when they are in the state.

Treadell said the Duchess will meet with representatives of Purple Lily, an NGO committed to empowering disadvantaged women and young girls by providing life skills training and financial education.

The visit will end in Penang, where their Royal Highnesses will visit the Unesco World Heritage Sites and the Five-Power Defence Arrangement headquarters in Butterworth.
