Daughter wins contest, thanks to mum

PETALING JAYA: Surprised and delighted – that was how Cynthia Lau Kheng Ling, 56, felt when she found out that her daughter Lydia Ong Yi Suan, 28, had won The Star’s Fly Away Giveaway contest for Week 3.

The prize? Two complimentary air tickets to Shanghai, China, courtesy of AirAsia X.

Lau made the journey all the way from Johor Baru to Menara Star in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, first by bus – encountering bad traffic on the way – and then she hopped onto the LRT and finally, the MRT.

“It’s worth it, for the prize of over RM7,000!” she quipped.

Lau accepted the prize on behalf of her daughter Ong, who works as a senior auditor in Singapore.

When contacted, Ong said via e-mail: “I am so happy to hear that I won The Star’s contest.”

This is the first time Ong has won any contest, and she is elated. Her brothers, Brian, 24, and Stanly, 22, also entered the same contest.

She has her mother to thank for the win, as Lau had entered the contest on her behalf.

When asked who she would bring with her to Shanghai, Ong laughingly remarked, “It’s a tough choice ... but Mum wants to go with me!”

If so, it would be Lau’s first time visiting Shanghai, and Ong’s second.

Lau said that she has been reading The Star for 40 years, and has subscribed to it for over 20 years.

Working as a remisier in Johor Baru, she always turns to the Business pages first, then only to the national news pages.

As for Ong, her favourite section is the Features (Star2) pullout, especially the comics pages.

And Pickles the comic strip never fails to bring a smile to her face, especially after a hectic day at work.

The Fly Away Giveaway contest is now in its final round, offering a pair of AirAsia X tickets to Gold Coast, Australia. Readers can still submit their entries, as the deadline is midnight tomorrow. Just go to Star2.com and search for “Wonderful food of northern Thailand and Krabi”, and click on the contest banner to take part.
