KUALA LUMPUR: The world’s largest duathlon event in the Powerman series will make its return to Dataran Putrajaya on March 4 next year.

Race promoter and organiser E-Plus Global Sdn Bhd said that the event, which is a platform for running and cycling enthusiasts, is expected to attract 4,000 competitors.

“There is a growing interest in duathlon in Malaysia and the Asian region. This is evident with the increasing number of multi-sport athletes, especially runners and cyclists competing in the Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships Malaysia.

“We will continue to provide a quality stage for participants to compete and expand the running and cycling industry across the region,” said E-Plus Global chief executive officer Andrew Ching in a statement yesterday.

Dutchman Thomas Bruins, the world No. 2 in men’s elite and two- time champion of the Powerman Asia Duathlon championships, has confirmed his return to the 2018 edition as he eyes a hattrick of wins.

“I love competing in Malaysia. The unique atmosphere is different compared to races in other countries. This will motivate me to perform better, especially with the large number of professional athletes competing as well.

“I will return to the Powerman Asia Duathlon Championship in 2018 and hopefully retain my title and improve on my overall world ranking,” said Bruins.

The Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships Malaysia comprises four categories – individual classic and team relay classic (10km-60km10km) and the individual short and team relay short (5km-30km-5km).

The organiser will also have a special category for children called PowerKIDS, which will be divided into three groups for kids aged between five and 12 years old.
