Cops to probe if DAP rep hit woman
Groups seek investigation but assemblyman says complaint was withdrawn
IPOH: Five people have lodged reports over an earlier police complaint accusing DAP’s Bercham assemblyman Cheong Chee Khing of assault and theft.
Cheong has denied the accusation, saying that the complaint – which was filed by a woman – had since been withdrawn.
Yesterday, the group, including state MyPPP youth chief Mohammed Nor Fadhzil Sahul Hamid and its state deputy chief Mustaffa Rahadi, lodged reports at the Sungai Senam police station asking authorities to investigate the claims in the complaint.
Reports were also lodged by Persatuan Rakyat Transformasi dan Progresif Ipoh Perak’s deputy chairman B. Ashok Kumar, its treasurer Zainal Abidin Mira Mydin and Persatuan Gabungan Kelab Permotoran Negeri Perak committee member K. Gajendran.
In their reports, they claimed that they had been browsing the Internet on Nov 1 when they came across an article in a blog detailing allegations that Cheong had hit the woman and stolen her money and other belongings.
“I hope the police will investigate whether the claims are legitimate. If indeed these are true, then the police must take stern action,” said Mohammed Nor Fadhzil.
Denying the allegations, Cheong said he was told that the woman had withdrawn her complaint.
“If indeed she claimed that all the above was true, then what is her reason for withdrawing the report?
“The police have yet to call me over the matter,” he said, adding that he believed the report to be politically motivated.
He said a press conference with his lawyer M. Kulasegaran would be held today.
When contacted, Ipoh police chief Asst Comm Mohd Ali Tamby confirmed that five police reports were lodged.
Asked if the woman had indeed withdrawn her report, he replied: “That, too, we will continue to investigate.”
