SEREMBAN: Police have obtained a CCTV recording of the fire that destroyed the upper floor of the Seremban wet market on Sept 9.

State police chief Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin said the recording had been sent to its forensic department to be analysed.

“We have obtained a report from the Fire and Rescue Department and are now investigating it under Section 438 of the Penal Code for causing mischief with fire,” he said.

A total of 392 shops were destroyed in the fire on the upper floor of the double-storey market.

“The moment we get some leads, we will track the offenders down,” he said.

On Wednesday, state Fire and Rescue Department chief Norazam Khamis said the fire was an act or arson.

He said the department’s forensic team, assisted by two sniffer dogs, found traces of petrol at one of the stalls and solid fuel in a bin nearby.

“Our investigations revealed that the fire was deliberately started.

“We have submitted our findings to the police and we will leave it to them to investigate the matter further,” he added.

The state government has allocated RM6mil to rebuild the upper floor.

The traders are now temporarily plying their trade in tents put up at the market’s car park.
