Malaysia out to win first match of ACC tourney

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's biggest challenge in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Under-19 tournament, which begins today, is to win their first match.

The national juniors have never won a single match in the last three editions – in Kuala Lumpur in 2012, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2014 and Sri Lanka last year.

Malaysia, who are hosting the tournament for the second time, will open their Group A match against three-time champions India in the 50-over match at the Kinrara Oval in Puchong today.

The other teams in the group are Nepal and Bangladesh.

Group B comprises Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and newcomers Afghanistan.

Malaysia played against India in a group match last year and lost by 235 runs in the 50-over match.

To make matters worse, Malaysia will not have the services of seven key players, who are sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.

Malaysian captain Virandeep Singh said that the tournament would be a good platform for them to gain experience.

“We lost to India by more than 200 runs last year. We bowled well against them but were let down by poor batting.

“I hope we will be mentally ready to face them again this time,” said the 18-year-old Virandeep, who will be featuring for the third time in the tournament.

India too will be without two key players – Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill, who are playing in the Ranji Trophy in India.

The tournament will be played at three venues – Kinrara Academy Oval in Puchong, Bayuemas Oval in Klang and Royal Selangor Club in Mont Kiara.

The final is on Nov 19.
