PETALING JAYA: Teenagers Hanis Nazirul Jaya Surya and Jellson Jabillin look good to deliver a medal in the men’s 10m platform synchro in their debut Commonwealth Games appearance in Gold Coast in April.

The two 16-year-olds snatched a bronze for Malaysia in the 10m platform synchro at the Australian Diving Grand Prix in Gold Coast yesterday.

Hanis-Jellson finished the six-dive competition at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre with 334.62 points behind Britain’s James Heatly-Lucas Thomson (341.70) and Russians Nikita Shleikher-Aleksandr Belevtsev (390.84).

Another 16-year-old newcomer Gabriel Gilbert Daim also came good on the final day of competition to claim a bronze with Nur Dhabitah Sabri in the mixed 3m springboard synchro.

Gabriel-Dhabitah amassed 265.71 points. Germany’s Martin Wolfram-Tina Punzel won the gold with 276.78 points while Russians Nadezhda Bazhina-Nikita Shleikher finished second with a 271.20 total.

For Sabah-born Jellson, it was his second medal in Gold Coast. He partnered Cheong Jun Hoong to bag the silver in the mixed 10m platform synchro on Saturday.

Jellson was paired off with Hanis for the first time at the Asian Diving Cup in Macau in June and they went on to win the gold for Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in August.

“It has been very rewarding for me the last six months. I also managed to win the silver with Hanis in the men’s 10m platform synchro and gold with Jun Hoong in the mixed 10m platform synchro at the Malaysian Diving GP last month.

“My hope is that we can continue to excel at the Commonwealth Games next year,” said Jellson.

National coach Yang Zhuliang was happy to see his youngsters stamp their mark at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, which will also stage the diving events at the Commonwealth Games.

“The conditions were windy. The experience is good for them. Now they know what to expect when we return for the Games in April.

“Hanis-Jellson look good in the 10m platform synchro.

“I believe they can get a medal for Malaysia,” said Zhuliang.

Malaysia finished the last Grand Prix meet of the season with one gold, three silvers and two bronzes.

Pandelela Rinong delivered the gold in the women’s 10m platform individual and then partnered Leong Mun Yee to a silver in the 10m platform synchro.

Chew Yiwei-Ooi Tze Liang contributed another silver in the men’s 3m springboard synchro.
