Prominent figures to take helm

Notable individual­s to head boards of directors for new Chinese schools

KUALA LUMPUR: Plans for the 10 new Chinese primary schools earmarked for Selangor and Johor are being firmed up with prominent figures heading their boards of directors and constructi­on scheduled to begin next year.

Among the business leaders helming three of the schools in Selangor are Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd chairman Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian, Sunsuria Bhd executive chairman and the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia president Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap, Lion Group chairman Tan Sri William Cheng and Eco World Developmen­t Group Bhd executive director Datuk Voon Tin Yow.

Lee will be the chairman of SJK(C) Lee Loy Seng in Ijok; Ter will be the chairman of SJK(C) Sunsuria in Sepang, while Cheng will be its vicechairm­an; and Voon, the chairman of SJK(C) Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu in Puncak Alam.

MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who made the announceme­nt at Wisma MCA here, said some of the boards are confident that constructi­on would start next year if matters such as land issues and applicatio­ns proceed smoothly as planned.

“With MCA’s help, the applicatio­n and approval process will be fasttracke­d,” he said.

Last month, Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid announced the building of the 10 schools and the relocation of six other Chinese primary schools.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had said that nine out of the 10 schools are named after nationalis­ts and prominent personalit­ies in recognitio­n of their contri bution to the country.

Two other new schools in Selangor are SJK(C) Tun Omar Ong Yoke Lin, whose board will be chaired by Kuala Langat MCA division chief Datuk Ei Kim Hock; and SJK(C) Too Joon Hing, to be headed by Taman Putra Prima Phase 8A (Puchong) Residents’ Associatio­n chairman Kong Kok Meng.

Five other schools which will be located in Johor and their respective chairmen are: SJK(C) Tan Sri Kuek Ho Yao (Southern University College chairman Datuk Teo Ah Kiang); SJK(C) Datuk Sim Mow Yu (Johor Baru TiongHua Associatio­n president Datuk Seri Tey Kim Chai); SJK(C) Tun H.S. Lee (former chairman of SJK(C) Foon Yew 5 board of directors Cheng Chean Chiang); SJK(C) Datuk Cheah Fah (Gelang Patah MCA division chief Datuk Jason Teoh); and SJK(C) Tan Kah Kee (Dr Ngoh Wei Ching).

Apart from naming the schools’ board chairmen, Dr Wee also announced their vicechairm­en at yesterday’s event.

He also made known the notable individual­s who will head the boards of the six relocated schools.
