Use branding iron on sexual predators, says lawmaker

-

A LAWMAKER has suggested using a hot iron to brand perpetrators of sexual crimes against children, especially in incest cases.

Datuk Ahmad Lai Bujang (BN-Sibuti) said it would be “a fitting punishment” for such offenders.

He said the entire family suffers when incest happens.

“So how do we react towards these culprits for committing such a heinous crime?

“I suggest we take a hot iron rod and brand him so he feels the pain and suffering of the victim,” said Ahmad Lai during the question and answer session.

Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said asked Ahmad Lai if that was merely a proposal and then turned his attention to Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.

But she remained seated and did not respond to him, so he called for the next question.

Earlier, Azizah said there are several forms of protection and welfare given to children who are victims of sexual crimes, and their families.

Among these is ensuring police protection for the victims, and psychological and emotional therapy provided by the Welfare Department.

“Apart from that, the victims and their family members need to attend an interactive workshop, as well as (one teaching) parenting skills, to further strengthen the family and help with the recovery process,” she said in reply to Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud (AmanahKota Raja).

She said RM250 is provided monthly to those looking after the victims.

Azizah said it is vital for families to form good relationships with each other, especially between a mother and her children.

“The mother can be a friend to discuss matters and provide a shoulder to cry on,” she said.
