BUTTERWORTH: A property developer has won the bid for the licence plate PNG1 with his offer of RM350,000.

The amount was the highest among six bidders, doubling the previous record for PNB1, which was sold for RM173,800.

Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement unit chief Zulkarnain Yasin said PNG5 and PNG9 received the second and third highest bids. Both numbers were sold for RM95,000 and RM91,500 respectively.

Bidding for the latest series began on Oct 30 and ended on Nov 13.

PNG is a common abbreviation for “Penang” while PNB could also stand for Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Malaysia’s biggest fund management company.

“The PNG prefix is highly sought-after, attracting a total of 1,554 tender applications.

“Of the total, 738 applicants were successful, fetching a total of RM1.9mil in revenue, the highest for Penang after the PNB series,” he said.

In 2015, one of the highest sums tendered for car number plates was for “Patriot 1” which was sold for RM1.3mil.

Another number plate which made headlines was F1. Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar won the bid with RM836,660, in July last year.

He also won W1N for RM748,000 in 2014 and WWW1 for RM520,000 in 2012.
