KUALA LUMPUR: A partial car number plate sparked a high-speed chase from Old Klang Road to Jalan PJS 5 before police opened fire on a suspect, who is still on the run.

The tail end of the chase and shooting, believed to be in the Taman Medan area, was caught on video early yesterday before appearing on social media.

The 51-second video showed police stopping the silver Proton Persona, while shouting for the suspect to exit the vehicle.

Their instructions were ignored with the suspect reversing the car. Shots were then fired before the vehicle sped off, with police closely behind.

Around nine shots were believed to have been fired as warnings, and in self-defence.

The drama started earlier when Brickfields police initially stopped a car near Scott Garden, after noticing that its number plate was incomplete.

The suspect however sped off with police in pursuit. Two other police vehicles also joined the chase.

City police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim confirmed the incident when met by reporters after inspecting the Putra World Trade Centre for the upcoming Umno general assembly.

“He rammed one of our units and continued to do so when we tried to make the arrest. Because of that we were forced to open fire,” he said.

He added that soon after, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He is currently still at large.

“We are still hunting down the suspect and those with information are urged to inform the police immediately,” he said, adding that the forensic team was investigating the abandoned car. It’s learnt the car was reported stolen in 2015.
