PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Goh Liu Ying flirted with danger before checking into the quarter-finals at the India Internatio­nal Challenge in Mumbai.

The scratch pair toiled for an hour to beat India’s Saurabh Sharma-Anoushka Parikh 21-16, 22-24, 21-10 in the first round, comprising 16 pairs, at the Brabourne Stadium yesterday.

They will take on former internatio­nal K. Yogendran and Prajakta Sawant of India for a place in the semi-finals.

Tang Jie-Liu Ying are hoping to win their second straight title after bagging their maiden crown at the India Internatio­nal Series in Hyderabad last week.

Hoo Pang Ron-Peck Yen Wei made it a double delight for Malaysia when they cleared the first hurdle with a hard-fought 13-21, 21-13, 21-13 win over Sanyam Shukla-Kuhoo Garg of India.

They should beat qualifiers S. Sunjith-K.P. Sruthi of India today to book a place in the semi-finals.

There was mixed fortunes for Malaysia in men’s singles when former Asian junior champion Soo Teck Zhi marched into the second round while Chong Yee Han fell by the wayside.

Teck Zhi took only 25 minutes to beat India’s Arun Kumar Ashok Kumar 21-6, 21-9 to set up a quarter-final clash against Rahul Yadav Chittaboin­a of India.

Yee Han crashed out 23-21, 10-21, 18-21 to India’s Lakshya Sen in the first round yesterday.
