Melaka BN backs ‘tactical withdrawal’ method

-

MELAKA: Melaka Barisan Nasional fully supports the idea of fielding direct Barisan candidates in the 14th general election (GE14) as proposed by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

State Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the Umno vicepresident’s proposal was the best way to solve seat tussle among component parties, which could undermine the coalition’s chances of victory in certain seats.

He said the “tactical withdrawal” method could resolve clashes among parties for certain seats.

Our withdrawal is not a defeat because it would probably give Barisan a higher chance of winning. Datuk Seri Idris Haron

“If we want to win seats that we have never won, then the proposal to field non-traditional candidates is a wise move.

“Hence, our withdrawal is not a defeat because it would probably give Barisan a higher chance of winning by fielding candidates with better potential,” he said.

On Sunday, Dr Ahmad Zahid said Barisan might employ the “direct candidate” method to solve the issue of seat fights.

A direct candidate is one who will contest under the Barisan logo instead of his or her party logo.

The approach was first used by Barisan at last year’s state election in Sarawak.

Idris, who is also Melaka Umno chairman, urged all Barisan component parties to put the interest of the coalition above their own.
