SHAH ALAM: Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s call to maintain harmony in the face of the coming general election should be heeded by all, said Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.

“In our fervour to gain support from the people, we must also take care of harmony and peace among all races,” the Selangor Mentri Besar told reporters yesterday after accompanying the Selangor Ruler to present the King’s Scout Award to 256 scouts from all over the state.

In an exclusive interview with The Star ahead of his 72nd birthday on Dec 11, Sultan Sharafuddin said the deliberate use of sensitive issues to fish for votes in the general election will destroy the country.

The Sultan said he did not wish to see politicians playing with race, religion and other sensitive issues for political gain.

The Tuanku added that it is the concern of all the Malay Rulers, and that they are very worried that too many sensitive issues have been exploited for personal gain.

The Selangor Ruler also spoke about the controversy over Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s perceived insult of the Bugis community, saying it should not have happened.

Sultan Sharafuddin said Dr Mahathir “has a deep hatred within him” and that “his anger will burn the whole country”.

When asked about his views regarding the Sultan’s strong rebuke to Dr Mahathir, Azmin only chose to say it was important to maintain racial harmony in the country.

In our fervour to gain support from the people, we must also take care of harmony and peace among all the races.
