‘13% more must be directors’
PLCs must take in more women at the helm, says Shahrizat
STATE Wanita Umno should submit a list of candidates capable as directors for government-linked companies, says its chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
In September, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that public listed companies with no woman directors would be “named and shamed” by next year.
Wanita Umno, Shahrizat said, had fought for the policy. “It was reported that as of December last year, there were 16.8% women on the boards of directors of PLCs. So, we are still short by 13.2%.”
She also said Wanita Umno’s struggle was for all Malaysians. “We are not only fighting for bumiputra but all women in Malaysia. We also fight for all Malaysians of various races and religions,” she said when winding up the debate at the Wanita assembly yesterday.
“Our struggle has been genuine and pure. We are not fighting just to win the elections,” she said.
Earlier Wangsa Maju Wanita Umno chief Datuk Noor Aieni Mohd Ali said those under 21 should be kept under curfew from 10pm to 5am to ensure better supervision by their parents.
Noor Aieni said this would ensure that they would not be involved in any undesirable activities.
“We are confident that this is the best way to effectively address drug abuse, gangsterism and other social problems among the youths,” she said.
Supreme council member Datuk Razali Ibrahim in his speech explained that the statement “apa lagi Cina mahu?” (what more do the Chinese want) uttered by Najib following the announcement of the GE13 results was not meant to admonish the Chinese community.
“When he asked ‘apa lagi Cina mahu?’, he was not angry but merely wanted to know what could be done to woo them back.”
