PTA seeks action on poor state of school building

-

THE Parent-Teacher Association of SJK (T) Ladang Segamat in Segamat, Johor, has urged the school’s management and the authorities to repair the collapsed roof of a classroom, Makkal Osai reported.

PTA president V. Veeran, 33, said the roof of the classroom collapsed on Nov 22, but the matter was kept quiet and not reported.

No one was injured as the pupils were in the canteen at the time.

After two weeks, the damaged roof remains unrepaired while the roofs of other rooms in the building, which was constructed in 1946, are in danger of collapsing.

The roof structure has been damaged by termites and a few more panels in the computer room fell off on Monday.

School equipment was also damaged in the incidents, Veeran said.

PTA committee member A. Reng- anathan, 40, said many parents were considering transferring their children elsewhere.

When informed of the matter, Kemelah assemblyman Ayub Rahmat instructed the Education Department to conduct an inspection of the school immediately.

> Hundreds of betel leaf farmers in Selangor have urged the Government to consider providing them with temporary relief funds as their yields have been badly affected by heavy rain, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The farmers said on normal days, the proceeds from selling betel leaves were sufficient to sustain their families.

But with the recent heavy rain, the yields have reduced by 75%, and even the leaves that grow are too small, leading to wholesale buyers rejecting them.
