Pahang Regent wants folk in his state to stay safe as the weather takes a turn for the worse.

RAUB: Residents in Pahang, especially those living in low-lying areas and near rivers, have been advised to be more vigilant against floods.

The Regent of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said according to the Meteorological Department’s forecasts, the weather is expected to get worse after Dec 16.

“Usually, from December to January, the weather is different with heavy rains, but we pray that it will get better and no disasters will befall Pahang.

“If possible, we do not want any unfortunate incidents, including the loss of life, so be careful before it is too late,” he was quoted in a Bernama report.

Tengku Abdullah was speaking to reporters after visiting the temporary evacuation centre at a community hall in Kampung Pia here.

Also present were Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Abdul Wahab Mat Yasin and Pahang Civil Defence Force director Zainal Yusoff.

During the visit, Tengku Abdullah spent more than an hour visiting 28 families at the hall and presented contributions to them.

He reminded all flood victims who were placed at the temporary evacuation centres to look after the cleanliness of the place, including the toilets.

Tengku Abdullah also urged the authorities to make sure that the aid given to the flood victims did not overlap.

“After years of suffering floods, we now have a standard operating procedure which has been improved each year,” he said.

According to Zainal, the relief centre currently shelters 46 evacuees from 10 families as of 4pm yesterday, a huge drop from the 220 evacuees from 55 families at five temporary relief centres on Friday evening.

“There is currently no rain in Raub and many have returned to their homes. Only one relief centre remains open as of 4pm,” he said.

“Two relief centres closed at 7.30am and 10.30am while another two closed in the afternoon at 2.30pm and 3.30pm.”

Water levels at Sungai Lipis, Sungai Gali are normal and are continuing to recede, while only the water levels at Sungai Dong remain on alert but is stagnant.

Heavy rains for almost half a day from Thursday night to Friday morning saw 250 flood victims from 67 families evacuated to seven temporary relief centres at one point.

Between Dec 2 and 4, three relief centres were opened in Raub with 71 victims from 25 families from Kampung Melayu Cheroh, Kampung Ulu Sungai and Kampung Kuala Semantan.
