Cheering on a winning attitude for their team

-

“YOU will never walk alone,” Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin assured party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, a known Manchester United (MU) fan.

“Although we know that the president is a diehard supporter of MU, there’s nothing wrong with us using the Liverpool slogan to show our loyalty and perseverance as a team.

“Though their last days of glory were in the 90s, they still hold dear to their team spirit.

“This is what Umno members must emulate,” she said during her winding up speech at the Umno annual general assembly here yesterday.

Mas said Umno must field winnable, likeable, workable and capable candidates in order to attract youth and women voters.

“As of September 2017, the per- centage of young voters under 40 comprises 40% of the overall number of voters.

“At the 13th general elections, women voters represented 50.23% of voters.

“Umno must therefore respond to the voice of women and the youth by fielding candidates with the right criteria,” she said.

Mas also condemned the publica- tion of a caricature published in an online Malay language portal that she deemed degrading to women.

The caricature depicted a husband daydreaming about a Puteri member after coming back from PWTC, while a bubble dialogue over his wife’s head read that she suspected her husband was thinking of the “Malay agenda”.

“Representing the voice of women in and outside this hall, I condemn the publication of the caricature,” she said.

On Friday, Puteri lodged a police report against its former member Wan Ashima Kamarudin who was reported by a news portal to have made the claim that many cases of khalwat (close proximity) occur every time the assembly comes around.
