Jimmy puts things right, at last

After a slow start Chia gets his game on track to clinich the Carlsberg Classic title

TOUTED as the country’s largest and longest running amateur golf tournament, the Carlsberg Golf Classic hosted more 120 players in the 2017 national final at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club to bring the curtain down on yet another outstanding event.

After 32 qualifying rounds, held over four months and at some of Malaysia’s best golf clubs, Jimmy Chia, a member of Kota Permai, was crowned the gross champion, while Yap Chin Tong from Tropicana Golf & Country Club, clinched the nett title.

“Living up to our brand promise of delivering a great experience, we injected a twist of fun into the game this year by offering a lot more prizes and fun activities,” said Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Lars Lehmann, at the prize presentation ceremony.

“For the golfers, who value the competitive game as much as fun-golfing, this year’s event, we believe, turned out to be just what we set out to achieve.

“There were many surprises and personalised items,” added Lehmann, “such as a dedicated locker with goodies in them.

“Equally important was a constant flow of our brews.”

More than RM700,000 worth of prizes and goodies were up for grabs at this year’s national final. And it was fitting to see Chia, playing off scratch (0 handicap) emerge as the champion with an outstanding round of one-under 71.

For Chia, who played the Carlsberg Classic for more than 15 years, it was the first time he secured victory at the tournament.

“I didn’t start off too well,” said Chia. “But I got my rhythm going after a while and was able to bounce back with five birdies.

“That’s what turned it around for me and I’m just so happy to have won this tournament at last.

“I’ve tried several times before this year and to finally do it is very satisfying.”

Yap, 56, a six handicapper, claimed the nett category on countback with a score of 68.

Both Chia and Yap collected a trophy and 60-inch Sharp LED TV.

In addition to four hole-in-one luxury prizes such as a MercedesBenz C350, a MercedesBenz C200, a 70-inch Sharp 70 TV and Ogawa Masterdrive massage chair, the top five gross and nett winners also received 60-inch Sharp LED TVs, Ogawa Mobile massage cushions, TaylorMade M2 woods, TaylorMade Purelite stand bags and Mercedes golf bags.

Adding to the fun, Carlsberg introduced a ‘chipping contest’ and offered shoulder and neckk massages along the way.

The winners of the fun challenges were rewardedd with prizes such as a Mercedes Benz Driving Experience, 50-incch Sharp TVs, TaylorMade backpacks, golf balls and wedges, Carlsberg Smoothh Draught, adidas pouches anda ball marker belt, and voucherss from Lala Chong Seafood Restauurant, Saujana Hotels & Resorts and Kota Permai Golf .

The official partners of the Carlsberg Classic 2017 were MercedesBenz, Sharp, Ogawa, TaylorMade, Cutter &

Buck, Titoni watches, Saujana Hotels and Resortts, Gatorade, Jura, Wonda cofffee, Sunplay, ParGolf and Lala Chong Seafood Restaurant.
