Honorary degree for social activist Lee
SOCIAL activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been conferred w ith his sixth honorary doctorate — this time from the Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) in recognition of his contributions to the community through social w ork.
Lee, w ho is the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health chairman, received the Honorary Doctorate in Social Work from AMU chancellor Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin at the university’s 11th convocation.
He had previously received Honorary Doctorate degrees from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Saraw ak, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Tenaga Nasional and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
In his acceptance speech, Lee advised the graduands to embrace the core values of excellence, discipline, integrity, mutual respect, confidence, openness in communication and humility.
“Put them into practice now and in the future irrespective of w hat profession you are in. Challenging times are transient but values stand the test of time,” he said.
He also reminded the graduands that academic excellence w as only part of their achievement, adding that they must also improve their skills in other areas such as interpersonal and problem-solving skills and individual creativity.
“In the face of globalisation, our country’s future and prosperity depend upon not just on intellectual minds but also the creativity to handle tasks and problems,” he said.
He said graduates must also be flexible, adaptable, able to communicate and cooperative apart from being a creative thinker, researcher and lifelong student.
“Such skills are crucial in today’s w orking environment to ensure our country competes effectively in this globalised and borderless w orld,” he said.
Among the various positions Lee currently holds are 1Malaysia Foundation trustee, Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation senior vice chairman and Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals patron.
