KUALA LUMPUR: The case of the Datuk Seri who allegedly assaulted three Rela personnel cannot be taken lightly, said Rela superintendent James Ee.

He said assaulting Rela members on duty was the same as assaulting government enforcement officers.

“Rela is an enforcement body set up by the Government. It is as good as part of the Government’s enforcement agency,” he said at Wisma MCA here.

Rela senior superintendent Moghan Ramachandam said he would be assisting the victims involved.

The press conference was held in response to another earlier by Community Policing Malaysia founder Kuan Chee Heng.

The accused, Liow Soon Hee, 29, reportedly donated RM220,000 to charity during the event.

It was also reported that Liow had wanted to extend his apology to the victims.

Ee, who is also MCA Public Services and Complaints Department legal adviser, said the case is already in court and it is not up to the victims to forgive or not.

Liow had claimed trial to assaulting the three Rela members last month.

Lee Weng Poh, 27, Melvin Cheong, 19, and Leong Jun Jie, 21, said they will leave it to the court to decide on the case.

“We will let the law take its course,” said Cheong, who spoke on behalf of the victims. They also said the accused did not approach them to apologise.

On Oct 27, Liow allegedly caused grievous hurt to Lee, Cheong and Leong while they were on duty at the Kou Ong Yah Temple in Jalan Ampang.

The three personnel also claimed they were each offered RM10,000 to withdraw their police reports.

They later lodged a report with the police and the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) over the bribery attempt.
