JOHOR BARU: Christmas is going to be a breezier and more spiffy affair for the kids of Berkat Children’s home after their premises received a makeover by some college students.

The group from Olympia College refurbished the home with two water heaters; a dining awning, a new signboard and even gave it a fresh coat of paint. The students also carried out plumbing and electrical works at the home.

The students, who are pursuing an executive diploma in Business Management, took three week to spruce up the centre along Jalan Dapat here.

Their lecturer, Prabageran Thiagarayah, said the programme, which was under the corporate social responsibilities module, encouraged students to walk the talk about “giving back to society”.

“They also conducted household chores and donated groceries total- ling RM8,248,” he said.

“These were made possible through donations from corporate companies and individuals,” he said at the launch of the refurbished centre on Monday.

The students hoped the house makeover would help the 15 children, aged between six and 15 years, have a joyous Christmas.

Berkat Community Berhad home director Davidson Saindran Lawrence said this was the first refurbishment done since the centre was opened some 10 years ago.

“It was perfect timing,” he said. “Our Christmas celebration will be a more cheerful one this year.”
