‘Once Sports Commissioner lodges report, we’ll probe’

-

SERDANG: Police are waiting for the Sports Commissioner to lodge a report so as to be able to investigate the organisers of Sunday’s marathon where three runners were hit by a car.

“Once they lodge a report, we will investigate the case from all angles,” state police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor told reporters after the Selangor Police Chiefs Cross Country Cup at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park here.

The Klang City International Marathon 2017 may face action for not getting an approval from the Sports Commissioner’s Office.

The three runners were hit by a car along Jalan Kapar Batu 2.

Sports commissioner Datuk Zaiton Othman said all sporting events in the country needed approval from the office, under the Sports Development Act 1997.

She added that they did not receive any application for a licence from the marathon organiser.

Comm Mazlan said police received a report on the accident and had taken a statement from the driver involved.

“We have classified the case as careless driving under the Road Transport Act.

“There is no question here. The driver will be prosecuted,” he said.

When asked about allegations that the driver was drunk, he said police were still investigating.

“We are waiting for the chemist’s report to know if the driver was intoxicated,” he said.

Comm Mazlan said one of the runners was still in critical condition while the two others received outpatient treatment.
