Marathon tragedy is also an eye-opener
I REFER to “Sports commissioner to lodge report today”, ( The Star, Dec 12). I must say that I’m chalking one up to the Malaysian Sports Commissioner’s Office for his action to lodge a report against the organiser of the Klang City International Marathon for their carelessness.
But in my judgement, this event has really opened up the public’s eyes to be more aware after this. The Youth and Sports Ministry knows best about this issue.
The police reports made may have only a temporary impact.
But if the public are made aware of precautionary measures when participating in such events, maybe these civilians will be more cautious.
I want to urge all the companies and organisations in Malaysia to take note of this matter. Organisers are aware that they will conduct a large event like this and involve the public as participants, so it is crucial to get a licence for the event.
A licence from the authorities is not something that can be considered unimportant.
The licence is proof not only that the authorities are aware of the event and have permitted it, but it also proves that the organiser is a responsible and ethical company.
Don’t risk other people’s life in the name of charity. The most important thing is that the organisers must tighten security and ensure the safety of each participant throughout the event.
I also want to urge the public, especially people who want to be among the participants, to be extra careful so that such incidents will not happen again in the future.
Participants should, in particular, take precautions like doing some research about the event in which they want to participate.
In addition, they should always be aware of their surroundings, especially on the road.
Other civilians also should take note if there is any event taking place in their areas so that if anything happens, it will not be too late to take action.
