Pakatan holds protest outside US embassy
KUALA LUMPUR: The show of disgust against the United States continued, with a large group of Pakatan Harapan members gathering outside its embassy over President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The group marched from the Tabung Haji building after Friday prayers, chanting “Hancur Zionist” (crush the Zionists) and “Hidup Palestine” (long live Palestine).
The protest brought traffic along busy Jalan Tun Razak to a standstill.
A group of about 20 police officers formed a human chain to control the protesters and ordered people to stay across the road from the embassy.
Among those present were Pakatan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, DAP MP Liew Chin Tong, PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and vicepresident Tian Chua, and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Mohamad Sabu.
Dr Mahathir, who came with his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, dismissed Trump’s decision as an “act of bullying”.
“Today, we found an international bully. He finds someone who is weak so that they can’t fight back against him,” he added.
He urged Malaysians to be united to put an end to hostility amongMuslims.
The others present included Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and social activist Hishamuddin Rais.
Amanah Youth vicechief Shazni Murni Mohd Ithnin said no memorandum was handed over to the US Embassy during the protest.
“This is because Umno Youth had already handed one last week. We are here just to add more pressure on the United States,” he added.
Last week, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin handed over a memorandum demanding that the US retract its acknowledgement of Jerusalem as the capital.
PAS also joined in the rally.
