Perak boy Khusyairi hoping to sign off junior career in style

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak’s Ahmad Khusyairi Abdul Razak (pic) is hoping to sign off his junior career in style at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Perak.

Khusyairi showed that he is set to be the star in Sukma when he stole the show at the ongoing Selangor Shooting Championships at the National Shooting Range in Subang.

The 20-year-old equalled the national junior record en route to winning the boys’ 10m air rifle on Thursday.

He then partnered Mohd Aiman Syafiq Zainal and Loo Jie Ren to break the national junior record in the boys’ team 10m air rifle.

“Perak is using this Selangor shooting meet as a training ground ahead of the Sukma,” said Khusyairi.

“At the last Games in Sarawak, I won a gold and three silvers. I hope to defend the gold and change the three silvers into golds.

“We’ve a good team of coaches (Felix Ho, Syaidatul Ashikin and Alais Nik Sulong). We’ve good support and facilities too. All these are factors behind the rise of Perak shooters.”

It was his ambition to become a policeman that led him to the sport when he was 14.

“I was involved in athletics and taekwondo in school. But I became fascinated with the police force and their guns. That’s why I took up shooting and I’ve not looked back since,” he said.

Khusyairi had a chance of joining the national team last year but he turned it down.

“I was invited after the Sarawak Sukma but I declined. I wanted to finish my diploma in Sports Science at Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam,” he added.

“I hope a good showing in Perak will earn me another chance to get into the national team. This time I’m willing to take up the offer.”
