School sweethearts get hitched in mass wedding

-

PASIR GUDANG: When two former classmates met at a school reunion four years ago, they did not imagine that it would lead to marriage.

Mohammed Fikri Mohd Abdul Rahman Balin, 25, said he had known Nur Husnina Mohd Zaki, also 25, since they were in primary school at SK Pasir Gudang 3.

But mutual attraction did not come immediately.

“When we were kids, we could not stand each other because we were always fighting. I have to admit that I liked to pick on her.

“We were always in the same school and class, even in secondary school. That was when we got closer to each other.

“But, at the time, we did not think about having a serious relationship until we met again during the reunion,” he said after a mass wedding ceremony for 24 couples organised by the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council at Stadium Perbandaran Pasir Gudang here yesterday.

Mohammed Fikri, a petrol station supervisor, said he lost contact with Nur Husnina after they completed secondary school and continued their studies at different places.

However, they bumped into each other again during their school reunion in 2013.

“Our love blossomed from there. We got engaged three months ago and now, we are husband and wife,” he added.

Nur Husnina, who is a nurse, said that it was Mohammed Fikri’s kindness that made her fall in love with him. She later accepted his marriage proposal.

She said that he did pick on her when they were in primary school.

But, she said Mohammed Fikri changed when they went to secondary school, saying that he became nicer to her.

Both of them became close friends when they joined their school’s theatre club.

Nur Husnina revealed that she used to think about him when they went their separate ways after leaving school.

“I always thought about him because we were close during our younger days.

“He is my best friend and he understands me well, especially what I like or don’t like,” she said.

Council secretary Saipol Rahman said the mass wedding ceremony helped couples to cut down on their expenses.
