KUALA LUMPUR: Bibi Roziahwati is glad her son received a set of school supplies under Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s ( TNB) “Back to School” programme.

“I usually spend between RM200 and RM250 in November every year buying school-related items for my son so the school supplies he received goes a long way,” said the school clerk.

Each set of school supplies is worth RM200 and includes school uniforms, shoes and socks, a school bag and stationery.

“I can use the money I have saved for exercise books and parent-teacher association fees,” said the 47-year-old mother.

Housewife Komala Gopal agrees that with the school supplies, she doesn’t have to worry so much about having to budget for her 14-year-old daughter’s school essentials.

She said her 19-year-old son was in college and so her family’s finances were tight at the moment.

“My family struggles to make ends meet sometimes, so our burden is lessened when we receive these items,” she said, adding that her daughter would be better prepared for her PT3 with the school supplies she received.

Muhd Syahqun, 16, who is sitting for the SPM public examination next year agreed that the school supplies would be helpful for him.

He shared that life has been difficult since his father passed away a month ago.

The school supplies he received would help ease the burden on his elder brother who is a cashier and the sole breadwinner now.

Some 200 students in the Titiwangsa constituency benefitted from TNB’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, which are in support of the Government’s initiatives to help those who are less fortunate.

In 2017, the programme was run in 50 districts across the country, with as many as 10,000 students receiving school supplies.

Since the programme began in 2013, a total of 12,000 students from 800 schools all over Malaysia benefitted from the programme.

“We believe TNB doesn’t just bring light to people through the provision of electricity or lamps,” said TNB chief corporate officer Datuk Wira Roslan Ab Rahman at the presentation ceremony in Dewan Komuniti Taman Maluri yesterday.

“Education is also a way someone can break out of the poverty cycle, and TNB is proud to play a role, in partnership with the government, to enable those who are in school to be given the opportunity to succeed in life,” he said.

The school supplies were given by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who is also Titiwangsa MP.

Johari, who was also there to launch the Family Day organised by Wanita UMNO Titiwangsa, lauded TNB for their CSR programmes.
