Former Telekom officer jailed and fined for graft
ALOR SETAR: A former assistant technical officer with Telekom Malaysia was sentenced to a year’s jail and slapped with a RM150,000 fine by the Sessions Court here on two counts of bribery.
Sukri Mat, 49, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty before judge Azman Abu Hassan.
The first charge was for soliciting RM20,000 from Badlishah Hamid, 47, to approve and remark on the work of moving copper and fibre optic cables in the Alor SetarGunung Keriang road for Telekom Malaysia as satisfactory.
The second charge was for receiving a RM10,000 bribe from Badlishah at a restaurant on Sept 21, 2015, at 2.50pm.
The accused was not represented, while Kedah Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission deputy public prosecutor A. Hafiizh Abu Bakar prosecuted.
In mitigation, Sukri asked for the judge to impose a lenient sentence as he was a changed man and regretted his actions, which had led to many family problems.
“I am out of a job after I was sacked and I have to take care of my three children, sickly 80-year-old father and mentally challenged sister,” he said.
Taking into consideration the severity of the offence, the court sentenced Sukri to six months’ jail and fined him RM100,000 for the first offence.
For the second offence, he was sentenced to six months’ jail and fined RM50,000.
The jail sentences are to be served concurrently at the Perlis correctional centre in Perlis.
However, Sukri will have to serve an additional 12 months if he fails to pay the fines.
