13 held in JB murder case

More suspects sought in connection with triad leader’s killing

JOHOR BARU: Four women were among 13 people rounded up by the police in connection with the brutal murder of an alleged triad leader at the Taman Pelangi petrol station.

The arrests of the suspects, aged between 16 and 26, took place over the last 48 hours.

“Seven of them, including three women, were detained in Singapore with the help of the authoritie­s there on Wednesday.

“In the wee hours of the same day, a couple, aged 22 and 19, was picked up in Penang,” said Johor police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd in a statement.

In a follow-up operation, police arrested four more people, in their 20s, around Johor early yesterday.

Comm Mohd Khalil said investigat­ions were still ongoing with police in the midst of identifyin­g a few more suspects.

On Sunday, the victim known as Ah Chiu was set upon by four men at the busy petrol station along Jalan Sri Pelangi.

They tried to bundle him into a car but he put up a fight before he was stabbed and run over.

Yesterday, six of the suspects

were brought before magistrate Noor Aisyah Ahmad to be remanded.

Meanwhile, the remains of the 44-year-old victim left the Nirvana Memorial Centre at 9.50am yesterday in Jalan Skudai here to Melaka where he was later buried.

A small number of family members and friends was seen accompanyi­ng the hearse as it left the centre’s premises, after three days of rites there.

Ah Chiu’s Vietnamese wife and a boy, believed to be their son, along with several others were spotted travelling in a bus, trailing the hearse.

According to Bernama, the victim had three sons.

The gruesome murder shocked the nation after a video clip of the incident went viral.

Following police investigat­ions, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the incident is believed to be linked to rivalry and competitio­n between two underworld gangs.
