GEORGE TOWN: Spirits were lifted for 40 underprivileged children from the House of Hope this Christmas – thanks to Gleneagles Penang’s “Make a Wish – Share Love, Share Joy, Share a Gift” project.

Writing what they wished for Christmas on cards, the children had hung them up on a Christmas tree at the Gleneagles’ lobby late last month.

On Wednesday, the children received their gifts, bought by well-wishers – staff, corporate partners and members of the public – at the hospital.

Among the recipients were the Murali siblings – Shubasree, nine, and Nithiyasree, 12.

“I asked for a study table so I can do my homework and revise,” said Shubasree.

Her elder sister said: “I asked for Popular vouchers so I can buy books.”

Besides gifts, children were presented with other goodies such as soft toys from Santa Claus and Santarina, who also made an appearance.

Legalochani Magitheran, 12, was just as delighted to receive a Minion plush toy in addition to the study table she had wanted.

“It is my favourite character and it will accompany me when I read or do my home-

work on my new desk next year,” she said.

Among those who bought presents for the children were Canadian couple Darcy and Pamela Kennedy, who were at the hospital for treatment in the midst of sailing around the world.

“We do not have any children ourselves but after seeing their wishes, we felt we had to make a contribution,” said Darcy.

Another is Andrew Tan, aged just 11. He took out the entire savings from his piggy bank to buy a bicycle for one of the children.

“I’m glad that I could make someone happy,” said Tan, whose father, insurance agent Leo Tan, also sponsored several more bicycles.

Gleneagles Penang CEO Ivan Loh said the corporate social responsibility project was run with the support of Jabil Global Services.

“We’ve run several such projects since last year. Besides Christmas, we’ve held similar ones for festive occasions such as Chinese New Year or Hari Raya.

“Every time, we benefit a different group – from residents of old folks’ homes to special needs children.

“Beyond the simple items that bring these kids so much joy, what we hope to achieve is to connect the heart of the community with those less fortunate and create a spirit of sharing and giving,” he added.
