SEREMBAN: Now that he has been picked to stand in Seremban for the general election, “Ah Chong” is ready to go the extra mile to wrest back the parliamentary seat from the Opposition.

MCA Youth chief Datuk Chong Sin Woon – who has often asked to be addressed as “Ah Chong” – said he aimed to make the voices of Seremban folk heard in Parliament.

“Seremban will be one of the development centres in the next 30 years under the Malaysian Vision Valley. It would be best for Seremban constituents to have a representative who is part of the government administration.

“I hope that the voters in Seremban can give me their support and a chance to represent them,” he told reporters at the Seremban wet market yesterday.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had earlier announced that Chong was MCA’s candidate for Seremban.

Chong, who expressed his gratitude to the party and Barisan Nasional, said the Seremban constituency was a challenging one.

He said although the seat is held by a top DAP leader – dubbed the next party secretarygeneral – MCA is confident of retaking it.

The current Seremban MP is DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke.

“We have been on the ground for a long time. We’re confident that we can counter the allegations and misleading information by DAP to tarnish the Government’s credibility.

“The most important thing now is unity within the party and within Barisan. As far as Seremban is concerned, the unity among the component parties here is strong,” said Chong.

Describing Chong as dynamic, friendly, hardworking and popular, Liow said the Chinese community in Seremban wanted a representative from the Government to be their voice.

“MCA has proven that it is able to give the best to the people here.

“We need a Chinese representative from Negri Sembilan for us to voice our opinions and provide continuous service to the people,” he said, adding that Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had also urged the community to throw their support behind MCA.

Liow said MCA members who wished to contest in the election had to go through the right channels within the party and not convey their intention through the media or other external means.

Later in the evening during the Seremban MCA dinner, Liow also announced that Seremban MCA chief Siow Koi Voon was MCA’s candidate for the Temiang state seat.
