Bundles of New Year joy born in Penang

-

GEORGE TOWN: Every New Year will be an unforgettable occasion for Beh Wei Kang and Gan Keh Li after they were blessed with their first bundle of joy on New Year’s Day.

Bank officer Gan, 26, was spending a quiet New Year’s Eve at home trying to sleep when she experienced contractions.

“Initially, I thought it was the usual pain and tried to brush it off since my due date is Jan 6.

“But the pain increased and I was rushed to the hospital in the wee hours of New Year morning,” she said at Island Hospital here yesterday.

She delivered her 3.05kg baby girl at 12.21pm.

Beh, a businessman, beamed with joy as he noted that his daughter could not wait till Saturday and decided to arrive on a special day.

“This is our best New Year gift and we cannot wait to see her grow up into a beautiful girl,” he said, adding that they have yet to decide on a name.

A few wards away, Tan Wei Lee and his wife Ng Pei Ling, both 37, were also thrilled to welcome their newborn.

Like Gan, Ng said the arrival of her baby girl was also a surprise.

“I was scheduled for C-section surgery on Friday, but early on Monday morning I started experiencing pain.

“It’s exciting to receive her on the New Year,” said Ng, a customer ser- vice executive.

Her daughter Roxanne Tan, weighing 3.62kg, arrived at 9.01am.

Checks at hospitals showed that the stork delivered 23 babies: five each at Penang Hospital and Seberang Jaya Hospital; two each at Lam Wah Ee Hospital, Penang Adventist Hospital, LohGuanLye Specialist Centre, Island Hospital, Bukit Mertajam Hospital and KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital; and one at Balik Pulau Hospital.
