MetMalaysia: Floods expected in Pahang, Johor

PETALING JAYA: Pekan and Rompin in Pahang as well as Segamat and Mersing in Johor are at risk of floods due to continuous heavy rains.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a red alert for the areas which it said is expected to receive very heavy rains and strong winds.

The alert was issued at 1.30pm yesterday.

A yellow alert means heavy rain is expected within the next one to three days and if there is continuous rain, it will not last for more than six hours and the rainfall will be less than 60mm.

An orange alert indicates continuous heavy rain for more than six hours and rainfall of at least 60mm.

A red alert signifies continuous heavy rain exceeding 240mm a day.

MetMalaysia also issued an orange alert for Kuantan, Maran and Bera in Pahang as well as Kluang in Johor.

A yellow alert was meanwhile issued for Dungun and Kemaman in Terengganu; Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat and Kota Tinggi in Johor; Jelebu, Jempol, Tampin, Kuala Pilah and Rembau in Negri Sembilan; and Melaka.

The department also issued a yellow alert for parts of Sabah namely Kudat, Sandakan, Kota Belud and Ranau.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the water level in Sungai Dungun at Kampung Pasir Raja has exceeded the alert level while Sungai Kemaman was still below the level.

The publicinfobanjir.water.gov. my portal of the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) reported that the Sungai Dungun water level at Kampung Pasir Raja had reached 36.05m which was above the alert level of 36m at 11.45am yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Sungai Kemaman water level at the Paya Paman Sungai Pump House was 0.27m, below the alert level at noon.
