Govt to ensure adequate aid for those affected by floods, says PM.

KUALALUMPUR: The Government will ensure adequate aid to flood victims, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

In a Twitter post, the Prime Minister reminded those affected to persevere, prioritise their own safety and follow the instructions of the authorities.

“I am monitoring the situation in the flood-hit states,” he said.

Floods have struck Pahang, Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak, with victims evacuated to relief centres and schools closed.

In Pahang, nearly 5,000 victims were evacuated from their homes to temporary relief centres in the state. The incessant rain sent the number of affected victims from 1,994 to 2,612 at 10am, and to 4,606 at 5pm yesterday.

Pahang Civil Defence Force (APM) director Zainal Yusoff said the 1,276 families affected by the floods were put up at 30 temporary relief centres in Kuantan, Rompin, Jerantut and Pekan.

“Kuantan is the most severely affected district with 19 relief centres providing shelter to 3,749 flood victims from 1,050 families, and the number of evacuees is increasing as the water levels of rivers also show a rising trend.

“Rompin is also hit badly, with nine relief centres sheltering 644 victims from 171 families,” he said.

Pekan has one relief centre with 204 evacuees from 52 families, while Jerantut also has one relief centre with nine victims from three families.

Zainal advised the public to follow the advice of the authorities and to evacuate when such a call is made.

“Watch your children and make sure they are not playing in the water. Keep important personal documents such as IC close to you.

“And for those who are taking medication, keep them close and be ready to bring them with you in case of an evacuation,” he said.

In Johor, the flood situation in Kota Tinggi and Mersing improved slightly.

The number of victims seeking shelter at flood relief centres stood at 371 people as of 2pm yesterday, a decrease from 426 at 8am.

Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat said two of the nine flood relief centres were already closed.

The two were at Surau Kampung Sungai Buntu in Kota Tinggi and Taman Nakhoda in Mersing.
