SHAH ALAM: Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin are expected to contest the Shah Alam and Hulu Langat parliamentary seats in the next general election, according to a source.

It said their names, along with the names of the seats, were submitted at a meeting of the Selangor Pakatan Harapan Election Committee here yesterday.

PAS contested and won the two seats for the Opposition in the 13th general election in 2013.

“PKR may contest the two seats, but the matter is under discussion and requires the agreement of all component parties of Pakatan Harapan,” said the source after the meeting.

Besides PKR, the other component parties of Pakatan Harapan are DAP, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

Mohamed Azmin, who is PKR deputy president, is now the MP for Gombak and the state assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa while Zuraida is the MP for Ampang.

In the 13th general election, Khalid Abdul Samad (now Amanah) won the Shah Alam seat for PAS by beating Zulkifli Noordin of Barisan Nasional by 10,939 votes while Che Rosli Che Mat of PAS won the Hulu Langat seat by beating Barisan’s Adzhaliza Mohd Nor by 17,267 votes.

SHAH ALAM: The decision on which Pakatan Harapan party will contest the 25 state seats held by Umno and PAS will be known by the end of the month.

Selangor Pakatan Harapan election director Dr Xavier Jayakumar said representatives from all four component parties had come to an agreement on several conditions following a second meeting.

“One of the conditions we have agreed upon is that it will be status quo for seats won in the last general election.

“As for the seats that were lost, we are having roundtable talks on who among the component parties should contest.

“The process is good so far, with understanding and a willingness to work together to retain Selangor in the next polls,” he said after a meeting at the PKR general election action centre here yesterday.

Dr Xavier, who is PKR’s Seri Andalas assemblyman, said the two seats held by independents – Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and Loh Chee Heng – would also be considered as status quo and contested by their former parties –

Currently, Umno has 12 seats in Selangor, PAS (13), PKR (14), DAP (15) and Amanah (two).

On the seats to be given to Amanah to contest, Selangor Amanah election director Jaafar Samsudin said it would focus on those that its leaders used to contest.

“We have agreed that the incumbents will remain where they are.

“For other seats where there may be overlapping candidates, we are still in the midst of finalising these. It is almost done,” he said.
