Association pledges to help victims

PETALING JAYA: Persatuan Orang Kota Bharu (POKB) will organise a humanitarian mission to help Malaysians who are cheated after being lured to work illegally in South Korea.

“I cannot believe what I have seen,” said POKB president Datuk Sheikh Ahmad Dusuki Sheikh Mohamad after visiting several victims in Besut, Terengganu.

Initially, he was doubtful even after reading reports of the matter but was moved by the plight of one 23-year-old victim, Aizat (not his real name).

Aizat lost four fingers on his right hand in an accident at a steel factory.

“I was shocked that this could happen. Based on my experiences visiting South Korea, I never knew of this issue which affected our people,” he told mStar Online.

“Action should be taken by the Malaysian Embassy there so we can compile a list of the Malaysians affected.

“POKB will try to get Aizat a new job. “We have a division for the disabled, so aid can be given to those like Aizat,” he said, adding that POKB would collaborate with NGOs and corporations on its humanitarian mission.

The mission will extend help to victims who have returned to Malaysia as well as those still in South Korea.

Sheikh Ahmad Dusuki said POKB is ready to act as the coordinator for distributing monetary aid and other necessities to the victims, as well as flight tickets for them to return home.
