Granduncle of Selangor Ruler dies
KLANG: One of the five surviving children of Selangor’s fifth Ruler Sultan Sir Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah Alhaj’s 44 children has died.
Tengku Aris Temenggong Selangor, Tengku Datuk Setia Muhammad Yusof Shah Alhaj (pic), 91, passed away early yesterday.
He died at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital where he had been admitted for several weeks due to severe dehydration.
Tengku Muhammad Yusof Shah is the first and only Tengku Aris Temenggong in the history of the Selangor Sultanate since its establishment in 1766 and was appointed to the position in 1937 when he was 11.
He was born on April 28, 1926, and his mother Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Sultan Sir Idris Murshid al-Azzam Rahmatu’llah Shah was Sultan Ala’eddin Suleiman Shah’s ninth wife.
Tengku Muhammad Yusof Shah, who is the granduncle of Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, leaves an elder sister and three younger half-siblings as well as other royal relatives in Selangor and Perak.
His wife, Raja Datin Setia Saidatul- Ezam Raja Datuk Seri Lope Nur Rashid, with whom he had 10 children, died in 2014 aged 78.
He served in the Selangor state secretariat in 1953 before becoming the then Penang governor Raja Tun Sir Uda Raja Muhamad’s private secretary.
Tengku Muhammad Yusof Shah’s remains were buried at the Klang Royal Mausoleum yesterday.
