948 still at flood relief centres in Kemaman

KUALA TERENGGANU: There are still 948 people from 207 families in shelters in Kemaman as at 8am yesterday, according to Terengganu Civil Defence Force director Lt-Kol Che Adam A Rahman.

SK Bukit Mentok is sheltering 843 people from 189 families and Surau Pulau Tempurung 105 people from 18 families. The school had to cancel classes because it had to serve as a flood relief centre.

All the evacuees are expected to return to their homes as the floods in the district have fully subsided.

In Pahang, the number of flood evacuees was reported to have dropped to 667 people at midday yesterday compared to 1,301 in the morning.

They are being housed in 17 shelters in Pekan, Maran, Bera and Kuantan.

In Johor, only 25 evacuees remain at shelters in Segamat – 15 people from three families in Kampung Mensudut Lama and 10 people from four families in Kampung Balai Badang.

The National Disaster Control Centre has terminated its weather alert (yellow stage) for Sabah due to the improving weather.

In a statement, the centre said that according to the Malaysian Meteorolog­ical Department’s weather forecasts, there will be no heavy rain over the state in the immediate future.

However, it advised the people to be still cautious in case there were changes in the weather pattern.

In Sabah, a Civil Defence Force spokesman said all 637 flood evacuees who sheltered at three relief centres in Membakut finally returned to their homes after floodwater­s subsided. — Bernama
