Improving their skills by volunteering
KUALA LUMPUR: Groups of youngsters spent their free time this weekend volunteering at the Star Education Fair 2018.
Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) Nur Athirah Lim Muhammad Faizal Lim, 19, opted to spend her weekend as a student volunteer at the fair to brush up on her communication skills.
Describing new experiences as precious, the Allied Science foundation student said volunteering gave her the chance to better communicate with people and to improve her English.
Fellow CUCMS student Reonarsia Sarnal, 23, who has been a student volunteer more than 10 times, said volunteering helped boost her confidence.
“I learn more about human interaction and it helps me prepare for my career as a psychologist,” said the Psychology student from Sabah.
Erican College student council president Khaswin Baskaran, 19, said the council members volun- teered at the event as a way to improve their public relation skills.
“Everybody needs this skill to survive in the real world,” said the culinary arts student, noting that he found school-leavers to be more independent now.
“They are capable of obtaining information on their own, not really needing their parents’ to do everything for them.”
Fellow Erican College student volunteer Chee Yen Yeng, 19, described her experience as “positive” and said the fair’s visitors were receptive towards student volunteers.
Chai Carlyn, who had earlier on enrolled as an International Business Studies student at Sunway University’s March 2018 intake, said being a student helper was fun.
“It is quite hectic, but I get to learn new things through speaking to students and parents,” said the enthusiastic 19-year-old.
Sunway student helper Lee Jie, 19, agreed and said he wanted to use this opportunity to be more comfortable in dealing with people and communicating.
