PETALING JAYA: Growing up, actress Siti Saleha Mohd Baharum remembers being involved in many gotong-royong (community cleanup) exercises.

The 28-year-old said that this taught her the importance – and joy – of giving back to the community.

“In school, we were encouraged to grow plants to make the school look nicer. So you learn to work together to make the community better,” she said.

She fully supports the #DaretoCare campaign organised by Star Media Group and SkyWorld Development Group – a joint charity initiative to address the needs of selected welfare homes.

Siti Saleha said the campaign helps to unite Malaysians apart from being a good platform to give back to the community.

“The message being conveyed is that we Malaysians unite to be there for each other,” she said, adding she would also rally her fans to support the #DaretoCare campaign.

Professional race car driver Leona Chin said that she saw the campaign as a very accessible way to help those less fortunate in the community.

“It’s so easy to go to the drop-off points at SkyWorld’s show galleries to hand in your donations.

“Since Chinese New Year is coming soon, it’s also a great way to ensure that they have the necessities they need during the festive period,” said the 32-year-old.

Chin added that the campaign also helped raise awareness that donations to charities need not be just monetary, but essential items as well.

“Some people might not be aware that donations in the form of school supplies such as stationery are also very useful.

“And it challenges people to literally dare to care, to have compassion and kindness in them,” she added.

The # DaretoCare campaign encourages members of the public to give and help the less fortunate by filling in gifts or donations of essential items in the given brown paper bags.

So far, 50,000 copies of The Star in the brown paper bags have been distributed.

Another 50,000 paper bags will reach readers on Jan 13.

The filled bags can be dropped off at SkyWorld’s property galleries in Sentul, Setiawangsa, Bukit Jalil and Setapak, from now until Feb 15.

The developer will then collect and distribute the items to selected welfare homes.

Alternatively, donors can also get the paper bags at any of the property galleries, or drop off the donations directly.

As a token of appreciation for donors, SkyWorld will give away

GSC movie tickets to those who are donating, subject to terms and conditions.
