Sungai Muar water level up, forcing 17 to evacuate

JOHOR BARU: Seventeen people from six families are still staying at two flood evacuation centres in Segamat, said Johor executive councillor Datuk Ayub Rahmat.

Seven people from two families are staying at the centre at Sekolah Agama Kuala Paya which was opened at 8.30am yesterday.

He said the residents of Kampung Kuala Paya were evacuated when the water level of Sungai Muar near Buloh Kasap rose to 8.9m from 8.88m.

Ten others comprising four families from Kampung Balai Badang are staying at SK Balai Badang since last Friday.

Ayub said the weather in the district was reported to be fine yesterday.

In Pahang, the number of flood victims rose to 452 compared to 397 yesterday morning.

The Social Welfare Department flood informatio­n portal said 333 residents are currently sheltering at six evacuation centres.

Fiftythree people were evacuated in Maran, with 41 of them staying at Balai Raya Kampung Baru Pertanian and 12 at SK Pesagi while in Bera, 24 people are being sheltered at SK Charuk Putting, and 42 people are staying at SK Chegar Perah in Lipis.

Meanwhile, the Meteorolog­ical Department has issued a yellow alert warning for various areas in Johor, Pahang and Sarawak.

The affected areas in Johor are Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kota Tinggi, Johor Baru and Kulai and in Pahang, they are Maran, Rompin, Pekan and Kuantan.

In Sarawak, the areas are Kuching, Mukah, Sibu, Sarikei, Betong, Sri Aman, Samarahan and Serian. The alert warning is until Friday. These areas are expected to receive heavy rain during this period.
