> There are only about 100 dugongs left in our territorial waters, Oriental Daily reported.
Dugongs are largely found in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia. They are classified as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species in 2008.
As the population of dugongs declines, Malaysia has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme to better conserve the endangered species.
As a dugong consumes about 40kg of seagrass per day, the conservation of seagrass has become very crucial to ensure dugongs can grow and live healthily.
Currently, the dugong conservation is mainly focused on Sibu Island and Tinggi Island in Johor and the Lawas waters off Sarawak.
