Two charged over death of triad leader

Five still at large after murder at petrol station

JOHOR BARU: Two men were charged over the murder of a triad leader whose brutal killing at a petrol station in Taman Pelangi was captured in a shocking viral video clip.

Gan Jia Ji, 20, and Yip Kah Hou, 24, nodded when the charges were read out to them before magistrate Siti Hajar Ali here yesterday. No plea was recorded.

According to the charge sheet, Gan had, with five other suspects still at large, allegedly murdered Tan Aik Chai, 45, at the petrol station in Jalan Sri Pelangi at around 7.30pm on Dec 17, 2017.

He was accused of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Restaurant helper Yip, together with three other suspects still at large, was said to have abetted the murder.

He was also charged under Section 302, which was read together with Section 109 for abetting.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Ghazali prosecuted the case while lawyer Chuah Shyue Chien represente­d Yip.

The court set Feb 13 for mention pending post-mortem results.

On Dec 17, a video clip taken by bystander was uploaded online showing Tan being dragged and stabbed by four suspects before being run over twice with a white BMW.

He had earlier stopped at the petrol station to check his car tyres when he was attacked.

Following the incident, 15 people were arrested, including four women, in a series of raids in Penang, Singapore and around Johor Baru.
