Nhaveen’s murder case management set for Feb 26

GEORGE TOWN: The case of four teenagers charged with the murder of T. Nhaveen has been fixed on Feb 26 pending the transfer of the case from the magistrate’s court to High Court.

Lawyer Datuk Baljit Singh, who held a watching brief for Nhaveen’s family, said Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid had fixed the new date for case management to enable the prosecutio­n to file an applicatio­n to transfer the case.

He said Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Fatin Husin had informed the court that the chemist report had been completed.

He told reporters when met outside the courtroom yesterday.

Only the family members of the four accused were allowed in the courtroom during the court proceeding.

J. Ragesuthen and S. Gokulan, both 18, along with two others, one aged 17 and another who turned 18 last July, were charged with murdering Nhaveen between 11pm and midnight on June 9 last year near a learning centre in Jalan Kaki Bukit, Bukit Gelugor.

They were jointly charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The four also faced another charge at the Sessions Court for allegedly causing grievous hurt to T. Previin, who was Nhaveen’s friend, at the same time and place.

They claimed trial to the offence when they were charged in June last year under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and a fine or whipping upon conviction.

Judge Irwan Suainbon also fixed Feb 26 for documents submission.

DPP Farah Aimy Zainul Anwar prosecuted. Lawyers Datuk Ranjit Singh, S. Yagoo and Maanveer Singh represente­d the accused.
