MELAKA: He took a few sniffs. And within 24 hours, he led the police to three men believed to have been involved in the death of a teenager.

That’s Xiao Hu (which means Little Tiger), an eight-year-old German Shepherd from the K9 Unit of Melaka police.

According to his handler L/Kpl Welster Amit, the dog was brought in from China in 2010.

“The dog can understand commands given to him in Bahasa Malaysia,” he said.

Yesterday at the state police monthly assembly, the male canine, which was accompanied by the handler, was given an appreciation medal and certificate by state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan.

“Due to his intelligence, the dog succeeded in tracing material evidence involving the three suspects in less than 24 hours,” DCP Abd Jalil told reporters at the state police headquarters in Bukit Beruang.

That was a murder case involving a Form Four student here last month.

DCP Abd Jalil said the suspects have been charged in court for murder.

It was reported that the three men, aged between 33 and 39, included the victim’s uncle who was alleged to have hit the boy for stealing his grandfather’s money.

A video footage of the assault, which went viral on social media, showed the boy being beaten with a garden hose and a stick. The teenager was rushed to a hospital but died about half an hour later.
