A MAN was charged with raping his stepdaughter 17 years ago, China Press reported.

The 66-year-old accused claimed trial at the Melaka Sessions Court to the charge of gross indecency on Wednesday.

He was accused of raping his stepdaughter, who was eight years old then, at a house in Tangga Batu at 8.30pm on Aug 19, 2001.

He faces a 15-year jail term and whipping upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Ruvinna Mohd Rawa requested that the court deny bail for fear that he would abscond again or harass prosecution witnesses.

However, the man was granted bail of RM15,000 with one surety after he told the court that he was previously arrested and released on police bail, and was unaware that a warrant for his arrest had been issued a year later.

> An Indonesian woman who followed her relatives to Malaysia to work was held captive soon after she arrived in the country on Jan 14.

The 22-year-old victim was also raped by one of the relatives in a house in Damansara Damai, where she was kept for over a week.

China Press reported that the man raped the woman in her room when the other family members were at work.

The man also threatened to beat her up if she refused to cooperate.

It is learnt that the other relatives chose to ignore her when she complained that she had been raped.

The victim, who is from Java, managed to seek help from her Indonesian friends working in Malaysia when her relatives and the man were away.

Police rescued her from the house. The police has since arrested the man and a few others to assist in the investigation.
